At first glance it is easy to overlook these two very simple words "just breathe". Breathing is a very taken for granted act that is responsible for the very life that exists within our bodies. Pranayama, the conscious control of the breath, also known as the vital force, allows us to bring our awareness to the breath and as such refocuses the mind.
Biologically, pranayama triggers the parasympathetic nervous system which activates the relaxation response, reducing stress leading to a loosening of the body and a lightening of the mind.
A consistent practice of controlled and deliberate breathing helps us to stay focused and calm during high stress and very challenging circumstances. It is a simple and powerful act of self love.
